Tina Fey’s Voluminous Oscar Updo: Here’s How to Copy It

The style critics have agreed that Tina Fey’s voluminous high knot/chignon thingy was one of the best updos of the 2012 Oscars, and I can’t disagree. Though the updo was larger than life, it looked striking on the red carpet. Polished, sophisticated and totally Oscar-worthy, it’s a style that any of us can actually do at home. But, I don’t recommend creating a look like this for any ol’ occasion. It should definitely be saved for a special event — a wedding, black tie party, etc.

Here’s how Richard Marin, Remington celebrity stylist, created Fey’s glamorous look:

Step1: “I actually began Tina’s hair on Saturday night for a ‘the night before’ party!” So, the evening before you want to create a look like this, blow dry your hair using a medium-sized round brush after spritizing it with a heat-protectant spray (try Pantene Pro-V Medium-Thick Hair Solutions Heat Protection and Shine Spray, $5.99).

Step 2: Use a one-and-a-half-inch curling iron (he used Remington Keratin Therapy Clipless Curling Iron, $29.99) to curl all of your hair into “soft, ’40s-inspired waves,” says Marin.

Step 3: On the day you want to wear the style, you’ll need to add extensions. Marin added extensions before putting Fey’s hair into a high ponytail, but to make life easier, pull your hair into a ponytail and clip on a ponytail extension piece (try Hairdo Wrap-Around Pony, $36.75).

Step 4: Wrap your hair and the ponytail piece into a loose bun and bobby pin it securely into place. Finish with hairspray for hold.

Tina Fey hit the Oscars red carpet last night and sported a gorgeous bun. Want to steal her style? You're in luck!

Stylist: Remington's celebrity stylist Richard Marin

Get the look:

1. Marin began Fey's hair on Saturday night for a "the night before" party!
2. Before blow drying with Remington's new Keratin Therapy Dryer and a round medium sized brush, Marin sprayed heat protectant.
3. Next, Marin took sections of hair and created soft '40s-inspired waves with the 1-1/2-inch Remington Keratin Therapy Clipless Curling Iron.
4. On Sunday, he had Fey not touch her hair at all so she had the perfect second day blowout.
5. After adding some extensions and reviving her curls with the curling iron, Marin brushed it up into a high ponytail and then created a loose, textured bun.

Finally, he pinned it into place, finishing with a spritz of hairspray to control flyaways.

Oscars Hair How-To: Tina Fey's Ultra-Glam Bun

Some of you were full-on annoyed that I didn't include Tina Fey's bun in my Best Of Oscars roundup, but, you guys, you've got to cut me some slack. There was a whole mess of gorgeousness going on last night—it was really hard to pick a top 10. Plus, Petra included her in her roundup of 4 little things you might have missed. But for those of you who are still plotting my demise, I'm here to make things right with a how-to from her hairstylist Richard Marin. See? I'm nice! Still friends?

Here's what he had to say:

"I actually began Tina's hair on Saturday night for a 'the night before' party! Blow drying with Remington's new Keratin Therapy Dryer, I sprayed heat protectant and used a round medium sized brush. With the 1.5 inch Remington Keratin Therapy Clipless Curling Iron I took sections of hair and   created soft 40s inspired waves.

"On Sunday, she didn’t touch her hair at all leaving me with the perfect second day blowout. After adding some extensions and reviving her curls with the curling iron, I brushed it up into a high ponytail and then created a loose, textured bun. I pinned it into place finishing with a spritz of hairspray to control flyways, and off she went!"

OK, I know that isn't super-detailed, so let me add my two cents in here. If I were recreating this, I'd split my hair up into two sections, top and bottom. Then I'd pin the bottom section in a half-bun shape at the nape of my neck first before pulling the top portion straight back first. This is a key step in the shape you see—you've got to pull it straight back before you pull it counterclockwise over top of the bottom section so it looks like it could be a ponytail from the front. Then I'd stick in a few pins the outer part of the two-bumped bun where it meets the head to get that cool pin-tuck effect you see along the side there. Oh, and I'd also loosen the very front of my hair, too—heigh it important there.

Those are the basics. Think you could pull it off?
